The Hyrox Sled Push is a grueling test of lower body strength and endurance, a cornerstone of the Hyrox Workout. But what if your gym lacks this crucial piece of equipment? Don’t despair! You can still build the necessary power and stamina using effective sled push alternatives.

Here’s a breakdown of exercises to incorporate into your Hyrox Training regimen:

Mimicking the Movement

  • DeadMill Push and DeadMill Sprint: This exercise closely replicates the sled push motion. Turn off a belt-driven or motorized treadmill, adopt a staggered stance, and push the belt with your feet. The resistance from the belt effectively simulates pushing a sled.
  • Push a towel: Using a towel on the floor can be a surprisingly effective way to mimic the resistance and movement pattern of the Hyrox sled push, especially if you don’t have access to a sled or specialized equipment. Use a thick, large and folded into a small shape towel. Do it in a smoth floor.

Building Lower Body Strength

  • SkillMill Sled Push: Utilize a SkillMill, a motorized curved treadmill, to replicate the sled push. Adjust the resistance and incline for a challenging workout.
  • Hill Climb/Hike with a Weighted Vest: Take your training outdoors! Find a hill and strap on a weighted vest. The incline and added weight will tax your leg muscles, mimicking the resistance of a sled push.
  • Treadmill Hill Climb with a Weighted Vest: Prefer a controlled environment? Use a treadmill and set a challenging incline. Wearing a weighted vest intensifies the workout, effectively simulating the sled push.
  • Squats: Squats, in their various forms, are a staple for building leg strength, essential for the sled push. Experiment with dumbbell goblet squats, back squats, or barbell variations to target different muscle groups.

Boosting Power and Explosiveness

  • Banded Resistance Runs: Partner up and use a resistance band for dynamic resistance training. Running against the band’s pull strengthens your legs and boosts explosiveness, crucial for a powerful sled push.
  • Wall March: This bodyweight exercise, also known as a wall drill, builds isometric strength in your legs and core, enhancing stability and power. Stand facing a wall, assume a push-up position, and alternate bringing your knees towards your chest.
  • Plate Pushes: Push weighted plates across the floor, engaging multiple muscle groups for explosive power development. Similar as the towel push but with weighted plates.
  • Hill Sprints: Incorporate hill sprints into your routine to develop leg power and strength. Ensure proper warm-up before sprinting uphill and maintain consistent speed for optimal results. You can also replicate this on a treadmill by adjusting the incline.

Don’t Forget Grip Strength

  • Dumbbell Holds: Improve grip strength by simply holding heavy dumbbells for extended periods. Gradually increase the weight to further challenge your grip.
  • Pinch Grip: Hold weight plates using a pinch grip to target your grip strength specifically. Time yourself and strive for longer holds as you progress.
  • Forearm Exercises: Strengthen your forearms with exercises like wrist curls and reverse wrist curls. Strong forearms contribute to a more powerful grip, essential for handling the sled.
  • Farmers Carry: This classic exercise strengthens your grip, legs, and core. While it’s a Hyrox event itself, practicing farmers carries with dumbbells or kettlebells will benefit your overall performance, including the sled push.

By consistently incorporating these exercises into your Hyrox training, you can build the strength, power, and endurance needed to conquer the sled push, even without access to a sled. Remember to prioritize proper form and gradually increase resistance or intensity to avoid injury and maximize gains.
